The United States Men’s National Team will open the field on Monday with a 26-man roster led by Christian Pulisic.
US Soccer released the roster on Thursday, which also includes Ricardo Pepi, who has chosen to play for the United States rather than Mexico.
A striker, Pulisic tested positive for COVID-19 nearly two weeks ago while he was with Chelsea in the Premier League and was quarantined, despite being fully vaccinated. He will be able to join his American teammates when the pitch opens.
The 2022 World Cup will be played from November 21st to December 21st. 17 in Qatar. The men from the United States did not qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
The United States will have little time to prepare before qualifying matches begin. USMNT will open World Cup qualifiers with three games next month: September 2 in El Salvador, September 5 against Canada in Nashville and September 8 in Honduras.
Pepi, 18, is a rising star. The FC Dallas forward will make his US senior team debut. As a double national, he could have played for Mexico.
“This country has given my family so many opportunities and has really helped me achieve my goals,” he told the FC Dallas website. “What better way to help them hoping someday to lift a World Cup? I feel warmly welcomed and can’t wait to show that I deserve to be here.”
And coach Gregg Berhalter, who has shared his vision of the team with Pepi, is undoubtedly happy to have him as part of the team he is trying to build.
“We have spent the past two years building the foundation and culture of the team for this moment,” said Berhalter. “Qualifying for the World Cup is a grueling challenge that requires a full team effort to be successful. We are confident in our ability to respond to the challenges that arise along the way.”
Other notables on the roster include striker Gio Reyna and midfielders Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams.
